What is Compounding?

Compounding is the art and science of preparing, mixing and assembling medications in a formula tailored to meet the needs of physicians and patients. Customized prescription medications are created to solve medication related problems.

What are some examples of medications
that might be compounded?

  • Lactose free, dye free capsules of most drugs
  • Ointments applied to the skin to treat nausea
  • Medication in treat form for animals appropriate to their weight, species and taste preferences
  • Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy
  • Smoking cessation lollipops
  • Pain medication in a transdermal gel (applied to the skin)

These are only a few common applications. The question to consider is: "What needs to be made?" rather than "What can be made?" Compounding provides the answer!

Pharmacy Compounding--Then and Now...

In "the old days", (1800-1950) pharmacists would "mix and make" formulas for patients according to a physician's orders.  Prior to the 1950's and 1960's, about 60% of prescription medications were compounded. With the advent of manufactured pharmaceuticals, the use of compounded medications declined.

By 1970, nearly 100% of prescriptions dispensed were commercially manufactured. The pharmacists' role now included medication therapy management utilizing expertise in drug action, side-effects, interactions, etc.

In the 1980's and 1990's, physicians and patients again realized the benefits of customized prescription compounding. Pharmacists were asked to provide alternatives to commercially available drugs to address issues of patient non-compliance.

Today, customers of Western Colorado Specialty Pharmacy receive personalized care. The foundation of compounding pharmacy is the triad relationship between patient, prescriber and pharmacist. Superior patient and physician oriented services include problem-solving, medication individualization and prescription consultation. The ultimate goal is to help the physician and patient achieve a more positive therapeutic outcome.
