Who uses compounded prescription medications?

Any human or animal may benefit from individualized prescription therapy, if what is needed differs from what is commercially manufactured.

Examples of patients who might use compounded prescriptions are those who:

  • Use Bioidentical hormones
  • Need a combination of medications
  • Need a unique dose
  • Require pain management not adequately treated by conventional dosage forms.
  • Have difficulty swallowing
  • Need a medication no longer manufactured by a pharmaceutical company
  • Are children and refuse to take medication due to unpleasant taste
  • Have allergies to ingredients in pharmaceutical preparations

Who prescribes compounded prescriptions?

Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Dentists, Veterinarians- any practitioner who has authority to write prescriptions.

Prescribers: How do I write a compound prescription?

  • Prescription should begin with the words: “Compounded Medication”
